Here is the text for Obama's Education speech. Also linked is text from a similar speech given in the fall of '91 by then-President George HW Bush. Similarities? Differences?
Similarities between Obama and Bush speeches: Both speeches focused upon America’s education and the future of America’ education system and staying in school. They also both described true life stories of individuals who have been through struggles, but have received an education and now hold a job. Bush and Obama preached how we all need to push ourselves to be the very best we can be and pursue our dreams such as becoming a teacher, a police officer, or simply getting an A on a math test.
Differences between Obama and Bush speeches: Although both speeches focused on education, each talked about the current concerns of the time, for instance, Bush talked about the concern over “sad” statistics on America’s test scores while Obama didn’t mention the topic of statistics or test scores. Obama mentioned how we as individuals need to take responsibility of ourselves for the sake of ourselves and our future while Bush talked about his push for anti-drug programs, anti-gang programs and awareness of gun safety in schools (ensuring safety for students and teachers).
Same~ focuses on America's future, staying in school, getting good education, going to college, saying that you need to stay in school if you want a career, told stories about other students who had it hard and still made it and had success. Differences~ Bush: speech was to a Junior High, commented more on drugs, talked more about other peoples' stories, ended it with telling them to write him with questions if they wanted. Obama: speech was to all K-12 on T.V., commented more on college, talked a lot in the beginning about his own personal story, ended it with don't let us down.(personally i was just like wow thank you, make it sound like if we don't make it or the US fails that its all on my generation. i don't know maybe i took it wrong but thats what it felt like)
