During oral argument about whether or not the 1st amendment protects distribution of videotapes of dog fights (and so-called "crush films"; don't ask), Justice Alito asked whether the government could outlaw a "Human Sacrifice Channel." Quite the eybrow-raiser of a comment, but it is actually a very good, and important, question about First Amendment rights and how far the government can stretch in limiting those rights. Read this article first, and then opine:
- If there were such a network, would the government have the right to censor it/ban it?
- If yes, why? If no, why not?
Yes I believe that the government should not allow a human sacrifice, even though we are given the right in our first amendment it would only be in some ways promoting the bad behavior onto others. That is why i believe that the government should limit what is posted on tv. It has been proven that in places such as Canada the news there is more positive and that in returns makes the area more peacefully and causes less violence.
ReplyDeleteWhat?? An honest to goodness human sacrifice channel? i can't get into the article because it said "files not found" but i can just about imagine what it might say. The First Amendment is very broad and covers a variety of things but if the US government allowed something even named the "Human Sacrifice Channle" we should all be worried about our mental healths and morals.
ReplyDeleteit won't let me open the article, but i remember you talking about it some in class. i don't think they should allow it to be shown on TV. plus where would they have them being done cuz i doubt they allow any one in the us to it that legally. So it'd have to be done outside of the US, not that that's any better. Also, you could get killers defending themselves saying that it was a sacrifice and that it was part of their religion.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that a Human Sacrifice Channel should be allowed because that's just sick. It shouldn't be allowed on TV where everyone has an opportunity to view it. Even with the first ammendment, this should not be allowed.
